Sorry but I've had it with people who don't mind to spend on the gadgets (cameras, sound) but then want to blag actors with the least hassle. A couple of friends of mine are professional actors and the shit they had to put up with to get recognized is unbelievable. The low-budget rag I'm shooting also depends on people acting for free (including myself) but the two pros who've agreed to join in get paid by me at a current rate even though they would do it for free and are my mates.

It's all nice and dandy, having free actors and all, but then to demand for them to be non-union so you can exploit them without fear of industrial action because your planning is so lousy they have to work 18 hours a day for three weeks solid just to get 20 minutes of useful stock (I'm exaggerating a bit but you get my drift) is taking the piss.

I write, produce, direct and act in my own films (mostly corporate atm, but in the process of making a short comedy) and unions never have been a problem for me.

sorry, guys! but no pay is kind of common in hollywood. 'cuz there are a lot of actors who almost came from the world. they need a proof how they can act. filmmaker also. we are in the same boat. thomas cruise was a king of student movie, u know. i don't know u guys country thing. tell me about circumstances of making movie each of ur countries.(^_^)/

It's not so much the no pay thing but the strings attached. Why don't you want actors who are union members?

all my cast and crew are on a points system,plus we pay expenises feed them get them drunk plus throw in the odd party and the vital vhs copies,

but i think assyrix you might have got the wrond end where he is saying non-union, all my shoots are also non-union

and my interpreation of a non-union shoot is that things such as union working hours and pay arent going to happen and i make that clear, also it protects myself and my production and all involved, doesnt mean that union members cant work on the shoot it just means the union isnt going to be reconised on the shoot.

The way I see it - unions can actually help you. If you planned your shots carefully (like you, Chance1234, obviously do) you shouldn't be afraid of unions. Everyone working in this industry should be clued up about the working hours so nobody seriously interested expects a 9-5 job anyway.

But to refuse organised labor so you can gloss over dodgy planning and hence take too long for your shots will only help you in the short run. If you're that afraid of industrial action you can always ask your insurance provider to cover you just in case. Besides, non-union actors can still walk out on you.

Both as an entrepreneur employing nine people in the family business (half of whom are organized) and as a freelance filmmaker I have never had problems with unions because I carefully plan events and treat my employess firm but fair.
